"I'm going to fail."
Salmon Arm RCMP received this head's up when issuing a breath demand to the driver of a Ford Focus that had gone off the road and into a ditch.
At 1 p.m. on Friday, May 9, a witness contacted police to report a black Ford Focus had gone off Notch Hill Road by Highway 1. Police said the witness remained at the scene to support the impaired driving investigation.
"Salmon Arm RCMP arrived on scene and conducted a breath demand with the 58-year-old male driver and only occupant, who was uninjured from the collision," said media relations officer Const. Andrew Hodges, adding the driver informed police "I'm going to fail," and did just that before declining his right to a second test.
The vehicle was also found to have expired insurance.
The driver received a $598 ticket for no insurance, was prohibited from driving for 90 days, and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days, with the matter being referred to RoadSafetyBC.
Alcohol consumption was a factor behind another 90-day prohibition and the 30-day impound of a motorcycle.
At 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, Salmon Arm RCMP received a report of a possible impaired rider on a yellow motorcycle.
"The complainant had helped the rider lift his motorcycle that was laying in the middle of the Foothill Rd. SW," said Hodges.
An officer already in the area quickly located the rider on the motorcycle, which had sustained minor damage. Pulled over along the roadside, police detected "the strong odour of alcohol coming from the rider and conducted a breath demand," said Hodges.
After blowing two "fail" readings, the rider was issued a driving prohibition, the vehicle was impounded and the matter was rerferred to RoadSafetyBC.
