Half of Cathedral Provincial Park will be reopened to the public after it was closed during the Crater Creek Wildfire in 2023.
Access to the park remains limited to foot traffic when it reopens on June 20, as Lake View Road is located in the closed section of the park.
The wildfire destroyed the bridge along Lake View Road that allows vehicle access to the core area of the park, as well as the Lake of the Woods and Pyramid campgrounds.
The bridge is expected to be rebuilt over the summer with vehicle access returning in the fall.
Two of the campgrounds in the park were destroyed by the wildfire and are still closed.
Reservations have been added to the popular Quiniscoe Lake backcountry campground in the core area of the park, accessible only by hiking the 14-kilometre Lakeview Trail or the 20-km Centennial (Wall Creek) Trail, and reservations will be required during the peak camping season from June 27 to Sept. 20, 2025.
People can reserve one of the 30 tent pads at the lake starting at 7 a.m. (Pacific time) on Tuesday, June 3, online: https://bcparks.ca/reservations/
Outside of peak season, people will need to register and pay online for camping at Quiniscoe Lake.
The Buckhorn and Lakeview campgrounds will also be available starting June 20 and will not require reservations.
Also reopening are five other trails: Scout Lake, Diamond, Glacier Lake, Ladyslipper and the Rim Trails.
The Lower Similkameen Indian Band has been working to restore land outside of the park that was burned during the wildfire.
Replanting efforts began after the fire was extinguished in 2023, and have continued in 2024 and 2025. Currently, the goal is to replant 840,000 trees by 2027.
