An Enderby garbage truck inadvertently became an incinerator after after catching fire while collecting in the city.
On Tuesday, April 8, the truck caught on fire "due to explosive materials – approximately 100 cellphone batteries – being placed for disposal as part of the City of Enderby curbside collection program."
The batteries then ignited as the garbage was compressed in the compartment.
In a social media post, the city added that through the quick reaction of the truck operator and neighbouring residents, the batteries were removed and the fire extinguished before spreading or causing any significant damage. While no injuries were reported, "this was a dangerous situation for all involved."
The city added that in addition to potential criminal charges in a situation like this, under its Garbage Collection Regulation placing dangerous materials for pickup is strictly prohibited and is subject to tickets or prosecution. If the individual is convicted, a judge can impose a fine up to $10,000 and a jail term of up to six months.
Prohibited items include explosive, volatile and corrosive materials, dangerous chemicals, and any other items that are dangerous to the health and safety of garbage collection personnel.
