Modernizing cemetery operations to better reflect community needs is at the heart of a proposed bylaw by the District of Clearwater.

In early December 2024, the district announced it was seeking input on Cemetery Management Bylaw No. 305, 2024.

This bylaw represents a significant update from the previous Cemetery Bylaw No. 78 (1978) and incorporates recommendations from the former Cemetery Advisory Committee and best practices in cemetery management,” noted a district news release.

Highlighting some of the key updates, the district said the bylaw introduces offering environmentally friendly burial methods that align with modern ecological practices, known as green burials.

Other additions include updated memorial regulations such as clear specifications for markers, including allowed materials and sizes, ensuring consistency and easier maintenance.

Also on the list are Improved guidelines for engraving options and standard sizes resulting in columbarium niche enhancements, as well as the reinforcement of a cemetery care fund that would help make sure that long-term maintenance and upgrades can be covered financially.

The district would like to streamline interment procedures which would cover processes for interment, disinterment and scattering, including new options for memorialization.

An open house was held on Dec. 6, 2024 but the district said those who could not attend could submit comments by email to Feedback@docbc.ca and that there would be more events planned for January 2025.
