Property owners in the City of Castlegar should have received their property tax notices by now, and the property tax deadline is fast approaching on July 2.

Payments should be made on time in order to avoid a 10-per-cent penalty which is automatically applied to any unpaid tax balance after the deadline.

With the potential of a mail service disruption due to a possible Canada Post strike, the city is reminding property owners that taxes will still be due on July 2, regardless of Canada Post job action.

There are a number of alternative ways to pay:
• In person or online through your financial institution
• Deposit a cheque in the drop box at City Hall
• Cash, cheque, or debit at City Hall
• Online via credit card at castlegar.ca/pay-online (user fee added)

For 2025, a typical residential property in Castlegar, assessed at $520,000, will pay approximately $3,135 in total property taxes in 2025. Of that, 46 per cent goes to the City of Castlegar to fund municipal services such as fire protection, road maintenance, parks, and water/sewer infrastructure.

The remaining 54 per cent is collected on behalf of other taxing authorities, including provincial education, hospital services, and the Regional District of Central Kootenay.

Eligible homeowners are encouraged to apply for the B.C. Home Owner Grant on time to ensure the reduction is reflected on their account. The grant is a provincial subsidy that reduces the amount of property tax paid on principal residences. Eligible homeowners may receive a reduction in taxes owed of $770 with additional amounts available to seniors.

The grant is managed by the province and the city cannot accept applications. To learn more or apply, call 1-888-355-2700 or visit gov.bc.ca/homeownergrant.

If you have not received your tax notice or have questions related to your property taxes, the grant or property tax deferment, visit castlegar.ca/propertytaxes or talk to the city's finance team at 250-365-7227 or email them at finance@castlegar.ca.
