More than 100 people came out to a rainy candlelight vigil in Chilliwack marking three years since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began.
The Ukrainian community living in Chilliwack, Abbotsford, and the surrounding towns gathered at Central Community Park on Sunday, Feb. 23 for the event.
They came together to honour the courage and resilience of Ukrainians amid unimaginable suffering, organizers said.
It highlighted not only the ongoing struggle but also the strength of the community – both in Ukraine and abroad. Since the invasion on February 24, 2022, nearly 300,000 Ukrainians have sought refuge in Canada, with many finding a new home, whether temporary or permanent, in Chilliwack.
“We are deeply grateful to everyone who has opened their doors, shared their food, offered support, and given us a place to rebuild our lives," organizer Anna Nemesh said. "Today, we continue this tradition to honour the memory of the fallen with dignity and gratitude and to remind the world that the war is still ongoing."
A candlelight installation was created in memory of those who perished due to Russian aggression.
"The words ‘Stand with Ukraine’ are a slogan that emerged at the start of the full-scale invasion and symbolize a call to the world to support Ukraine," Nemesh said.
Also at the event was Oleksandr Vorobets, co-founder of RIY Vancouver, an organization that supports Ukraine's defenders on the frontlines. providing them with medical kits and critical equipment.
The vigil served as a reminder of solidarity, with attendees lighting candles to symbolize hope and remembrance.
As the war in Ukraine continues, the Ukrainian community vows to keep sharing their stories, honouring those lost, and expressing appreciation for the support that has sustained them, organizers stated.
