The City of Armstrong’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability has not gone unnoticed.

The city was named winner of the Southern Interior Local Government Association (SILGA) Environmental Sustainability Award, presented at the SILGA conference in Kamloops on May 3.

“Receiving the SILGA Environmental Sustainability Award is a testament to Armstrong’s dedication to environmental stewardship,” said Armstrong mayor Joe Cramer. “This recognition highlights our community’s efforts to protect our natural resources and build a more sustainable future for generations to come.”

Council’s Strategic Plan places environmental stewardship as one of its strategic priorities, guiding projects and policies aimed at preserving and enhancing the local environment.

Key among the initiatives recognized is the Meighan Creek Diversion project, a vital part of ongoing flood mitigation efforts.

By constructing a stormwater bypass and implementing new culvert sections, Armstrong has bolstered its resilience against annual flooding and extreme rain events, safeguarding both property and community members.

Armstrong’s proactive approach to water conservation is exemplified by the revision of its Water Use and Conservation bylaw.

Through increased incentives for water conservation year-round, residential customers are encouraged to play an active role in mitigating climate change impacts. This dedication has earned Armstrong the Make Water Work Community Championship for the last six consecutive years.

The construction of the new city hall has exceeded environmental standards, through the integration of sustainable materials, energy-efficient heating, and lighting systems, and landscape design.

The landscape design, inspired by Make Water Work practices, will further reduce water usage, and promote habitat for pollinators, and ensures resilience to future climate change.

In a move towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the city has transitioned its fleet to electric-powered equipment. This includes innovative vehicles such as the fully electric Ford F-150 Lightning and a Zero Turn Electric Ride-on Mower, aligning with the city’s vision of a cleaner, greener future.

“The City of Armstrong accepted this award with immense pride, as it is a testament to the dedication of our council, staff, community members, and partners who have embraced environmental sustainability as a core value and a guiding principle in our community,” said Cramer.
