Abbotsford resident Satwinder Sharma, 56, shot dead in Fleetwood on June 11.

Police have identified Surrey's second confirmed homicide of the year as 56-year-old Satwinder Sharma, shot dead in Fleetwood on Wednesday afternoon at a business near 160 Street and 84 Avenue.

It happened at about 3:45 p.m., June 11. Sgt. Freda Fong, a spokeswoman with the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, said Sharma died at the scene.

"Mr. Sharma was at his place of work at the time of the shooting and he had no criminal history," she said. "Early indications suggest this was a targeted incident and no one else was injured as a result of the shooting. Investigators are working diligently to determine the motive and the circumstances surrounding the homicide."

IHIT is seeking dashcam footage from anyone who was in the area of 160 Street and 84 Avenue between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. that day.

“There is high foot-traffic in this area and we are fortunate that no one else was hurt,” Fong noted. “IHIT continues to work closely with Mr. Sharma’s family and our thoughts are with them during this very difficult time.”

Police ask anyone to call the IHIT tip line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.

This is the second homicide in Surrey so far this year.

In 2025 to date the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has been deployed in Surrey four times. Sgt. Freda Fong, spokeswoman for IHIT, noted that one case was determined to be a “non-homicide” and another involved a missing person presumed dead, “believed to be a homicide.”

“In 2024, there were nine homicides in Surrey. IHIT deployed 10 times but nine were confirmed homicides,” Fong noted.
Surrey had 12 homicides in 2023. In 2022 there were 21, and 10 in 2021. In 2020 there were 12 homicides; 21 in 2019 and 15 in 2018.

The most the city recorded in any given year was 25 in 2013, breaking the previous record of 21 in 2005.

Since IHIT took over investigating homicides from the Surrey RCMP’s serious crimes section in June 2003 it has to date cleared 206 of the total 365 homicide cases it has investigated in Surrey.

That is a clearance rate of 56 per cent. These cases, according to IHIT, “have been cleared by charge, recommended charge, or cleared otherwise.”
