A 100 Mile House man appeared in a B.C. Supreme Court room in Williams Lake on May 26 on a murder charge.

James Perkins is facing a murder charge originating from a 2021 incident in 100 Mile House. He appeared via video dressed in orange prison garb while he remains in custody.

Perkins was arrested on October 19, 2023, in relation to the shooting death of a man in 100 Mile House on October 19, 2021.

On May 26, the court heard how Perkins was hoping to retain a lawyer but was delayed in doing so "due to factors outside his control", according to lawyer Mr. Dosanj, who appeared as a "friend to the court" so Perkins was without designated counsel at the time.

Perkins is next scheduled to appear in court via video on Monday, June 16 in the B.C. Supreme Court in Williams Lake, with the expectation he would have obtained counsel by this time.

Crown expressed concern over the additional delay, as time runs out to complete a lengthy trial within the next year in order for the accused's right to a timely trial to be met.

The charge against Perkins has not yet been proven in court.
