1. WALK A LABYRINTH: At Fleetwood Gardens (15802 80th Ave.), a seven-circuit labyrinth offers an opportunity to quiet the mind and relax the body. In 2018, a special event marked the 10th-anniversary of the labyrinth, created in 2008 with the help of Diana Ng and others. An award-winning perennial border contains more than 100 varieties of perennials as well as an assortment of shrubs, trees and bulbs. The centre of the gardens also feature a European-style Bosque, comprised of 50 red maples. Fleetwood Gardens is a popular place for wedding and graduation photos, too.
2. BIKE FLEETWOOD: While cycling around Fleetwood, lock up your ride on “The Frasers,” artful bike racks created by Laara Cerman for use around the neighbourhood. “The design depicts the diagonal Fraser Highway, though the same lines may also represent the Fraser River,” says a post on the city's website. “One of the most iconic sights in Fleetwood is included: the breathtaking Mount Baker. The form of the bike rack is a tree shape, which references Fleetwood’s many wooded areas. In only a few lines, Cerman has captured the values and assets of this unique community in the heart of Surrey.”
3. GO COUNTRY: The Barn doors opened in February 2025 at Surrey's new country bar, open Wednesday to Saturday in Guildford. The large, 500-seat, two-level space has a stage for live music at 15330 102A Ave., once home to a nightclub where Lady Gaga played before she became famous (true story). Get there early on weekend nights, because it sure gets busy for all that line-dancing.
4. HOST A BLOCK PARTY: Did you know that Surrey residents can apply for a Neighbourhood Enhancement Grant to help cover the costs (up to $500) for food, insurance costs and other expenses of hosting a block party? No question, block parties are a great way to build social connections with your neighbours and have fun. Tips for picking locations, buying insurance and getting the right permit(s) are posted on surrey.ca (search Host a Block Party).
5. PEDAL AT INVERGARRY: One of the region’s largest downhill mountain bike parks is located in the northern section of Guildford at Invergarry Park, accessed from Wallace Drive and Surrey Road. The “local treasure” offers a range of trails to suit various skill levels and ages, including some of Surrey’s most expert terrain. Invergarry Park dates back to 1913, when the Surrey Municipality began consolidating land for the conservation of the Bon Accord ravine and creek system. Today, the park protects more than 37.5 hectares of "significant natural forest and riparian creek habitat and has a number of beautiful nature trails," as noted in a post on surrey.ca.
6. TASTE THE ‘SPICE TRAIL’: A few Fleetwood/Guildford restaurants and retail stores are mapped on a “Surrey Spice Trail,” launched by Discover Surrey. Showcased are South Asian and multicultural cuisine in six neighbourhoods on SpiceTrailSurreyBC.com, which features an interactive map, travel-blog descriptions of restaurants and tips on how to get more out of your dining experience. In Fleetwood the Spice Trail map shows Nanyang Asian Supermarket, Dae-Ji and Chef's Kebab, while Guildford-area favourites include YL's Curry Bowl and Sabai Thai.
7. BE COOL IN A POOL: Surrey’s eight outdoor pools are open for the summer with staggered opening dates. Best of all, admission is free, and swim times are posted to tidesout.com, along with lesson information and pool locations, or call 604-531-8855. There are two outdoor public pools in the Guildford/Fleetwood area, at Holly Park (13450 104 Ave.) and also Hjorth Road (10662 148 St.).
8. CATCH A FLICK: Surrey is home to a couple of ultra-comfortable places to see a movie, including Landmark Cinemas in Guildford, near the mall. It's a go-to place for summer blockbusters, of course, and also an air-conditioned escape from the heat of summer.
9. HIT THE ICE: Swim, skate, join a weight room session and more at Surrey Sport & Leisure Complex in Fleetwood. From June 23 to Aug 4, the facility's Rink 1 will be closed but the other two rinks will remain open for the summer. Also note that the pool and weight room will be closed for scheduled maintenance from May 26 to July 7, reopening Tuesday, July 8 (the arena remains open). Check surrey.ca for the drop-in schedule.
10. PLAY AT THE PARK: Free "Park Play" community picnics are planned across Surrey in summer, Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. until Aug. 28. Borrow a Park Play kit, lawn game or other equipment, or join in on a staff-led group game. Posted on surrey.ca, the schedule includes dates at Fleetwood Park (July 31) and Erma Stephenson Park in Guildford (Aug. 7), among other sites.
