In Trinidad, Dhani and his mother, Sumintra, are dedicated sellers of doubles, a beloved street food typically sold out of carts. But they are on the verge of financial destitution, which only gets worse when Simintra is robbed one night while Dhani is out on the town.

Desperate, Dhani makes his way to Toronto to confront his estranged father and ask him to help the family he left behind years earlier. However, he discovers that things aren’t exactly as he thought they were. For starters, his father works as an undocumented dishwasher, lives in a windowless basement apartment, and is in very poor health. He clearly is in no position to help.

Doubles tells the story of a father and son who don’t really know each other, or the lives the other has lived. Set predominantly in the suburbs of Toronto, this is a simple but impactful immigrant story about coming to Canada and trying to seek a better life than your parents, only to be faced with a similar set of challenges.

Both a heartwarming tribute to the immigrant experience and family forgiveness, the film is also a love letter to Caribbean cuisine and will undoubtedly leave the audience hungry for a chickpea curry and fried flatbread. Plan on going for dinner after the show!

Doubles plays at the Salmar Classic Theatre at 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 31. Tickets are available at the door for $8 (cash only).
