Pianist Sarah Hagen is touring B.C. this week with concerts in Surrey, Vernon, Comox and Nanaimo.

Celebrated Canadian pianist Sarah Hagen returns to Surrey with "Pictures at an Exhibition," an afternoon concert featuring Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky's "musical depiction of walking through a gallery of drawings and watercolours by architect and painter Viktor Hartmann."

Hagen is no stranger to Surrey Arts Centre, where she'll perform at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 10, in the Studio Theatre, a place where she hosted a series of morning "coffee concerts" several years back.

This week's 90-minute concert, presented by Surrey Civic Theatres and part of a short tour of B.C., will also feature Mozart’s "Sonata in A major K. 331," most famous for its Turkish March finale. Tickets are sold for $34/$39 on tickets.surrey.ca, depending on the "zone," or call 604-501-5566.

"I was recently asked what inspires me," Hagen writes on her website. "This is both an impossible question and a no-brainer. Everything inspires me: my astounding colleagues, strange dreams after a midnight feast with friends, three words strung together in a novel, a ridiculous joke, baskets of poignant memories.

"Let's see, what else describes me, in 10 words or less? Well, to be honest, I take my whiskey neat."
