A collection of surreal paintings by an Agassiz artist make up the current exhibition at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre.
Modern Mythology is a debut solo art show by Kayla Neufeld Gowans and it's on display from May 21 to June 21 at the O'Connor Art Gallery.
People are invited to "step into a world where myth and magic collide with modern life" as they take in a series of large-scale oil paintings. Her work blends fantasy and the contemporary, bringing mythical creatures and stories into the present day.
"Her figurative artworks are deeply inspired by her journey as a mother in the modern world. Kayla uses oil and acrylic paints to explore the surrealism that is inherent in the world around her," according to her bio. "Although she has no formal training, her passion to create has led her through thousands of hours of tutorials, experimentation and self discovery."
The artwork in Modern Mythology features bold, vivid colours where strong figurative imagery invite the viewer into a whimsical and sometimes eerie world that celebrates both the magical and the mundane, as stated in a press release.
"With a unique blend of humour, mystery, and visual power, this show is perfect for those who appreciate strange, captivating art that tells the story of an artist finding her voice."
Gowans is also one of four Fraser Valley artists who has been selected to take part in this year's Chilliwack Mural Festival.
