Trail and Greater District RCMP saw a significant number of mental health-related calls in the first quarter of 2025, as well as a steady level of criminal activity across various categories.

“Overall, our statistics remained very similar to the previous year’s quarter," says Sgt. Mike Wicentowich.

"Trail RCMP does expect an increase in drug trafficking investigations as our Crime Reduction Unit is back in operation."

Mental health concerns dominated RCMP workload in the first quarter of 2025 — covering January, February, and March — with 119 calls related to mental health and another 108 for well-being checks.

Together, they made up nearly 20 per cent of the total 1,176 calls for service received by the Greater Trail detachment.

In addition to those high numbers, police also responded to:

• 27 assaults

• four sexual offences

• eight domestic violence incidents

• six break and enters

• three thefts from vehicles

• one stolen vehicle

Statistics show the RCMP reported a total of 274 criminal code files for the quarter, including 53 person and violence-related offences and 143 property-related incidents.

Traffic and impaired driving continued to be a concern, with 43 motor vehicle collisions, 10 impaired driving incidents, and 86 violations under the BC Motor Vehicle Act.

Officers also opened nine drug investigations, a number Wicentowich suggests may rise with the return of the detachment’s Crime Reduction Unit.

Suspicious activity also kept officers busy, with 132 reports involving suspicious persons, vehicles, or occurrences.

Police also logged 77 calls for unspecified assistance.

Despite the range of incidents, Wicentowich noted overall crime levels remained in line with the same period last year.
