The Town of Qualicum Beach is set to develop a sustainable Economic Development Strategy project, kicking off with an online survey.

Building on the vision outlined in the town’s Official Community Plan and with community input at its core, the strategy will provide a cohesive framework for addressing a shifting economic landscape influenced by demographic change.

Key components of the EDS will include a SWOT analysis, identification of target industries, regulatory review and an implementation plan, according to a press release.

“Qualicum Beach has a strong sustainability plan embedded in our Official Community Plan,” said Luke Sales, Director of Planning and Community Development. “This strategy will help translate that vision into actionable economic directions that align with the evolving needs of our community.”

Input from the community and businesses will play a vital role in shaping the strategy, with multiple opportunities to share ideas and feedback. The first input opportunity for input will be a community survey, open until Aug. 1, followed by focus groups and pop-ups later in the month. A final report and presentation will then be presented in February 2026.

The town awarded project co-ordination to Nordicity in March 2025, a consulting firm with expertise in economic development, sustainability, and strategic planning. Nordicity will lead the project in partnership with Climate Door, sustainability specialists, for a total cost of $112,470.

The project is primarily funded by a $100,000 grant from the Province of B.C.’s Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program (REDIP), with the Town contributing $12,470 and in-kind staff support.
