High school students help tackle invasive species in White Rock park

Students help Green Team with environmental cleanup at Ruth Johnson Park

Students from two local schools teamed up to help clear invasive plants from a White Rock park last week,

Green Teams of Canada's Lower Mainland Green Team and the City of White Rock are engaging both local youth and the wider community to tackle Small Basalm, an extremely easy and satisfying to remove invasive plant, at Ruth Johnson Park this month, a Green Team release noted.

On Tuesday (June 10), 72 students from H.T. Thrift Elementary and Semiahmoo Secondary schools removed 2.5 cubic metres of invasive Small Balsalm and Herb Robert, equivalent to the volume of 15 bathtubs. The students helped revitalize more than 221 metres of habitat, the release said.

"I got to learn about the impact of invasive species to our ecosystem in the sense of how easy it was to remove and the reasoning behind what makes them invasive," shared Maddy, one of the Semiahmoo students who joined the environmental cleanup.

"We were able to make great progress and it was great to get out of the heat being in the shade."

More Green Team invasive species removal events are planned throughout the summer.
