The works of a late Victoria artist will help spread the love of art to aspiring artists throughout the community.
The Vancouver Island School of Art (VISA) will be hosting the Art Makes Life Better fundraiser at Victoria's Langham Court Theatre, with a kick-off reception on June 24 from 5 to 7 p.m.
The event will feature art for sale by local artist June Higgins, who was a graduate of VISA, as well as a board member. Higgins died in 2024, and in her memory, her family has donated her beautiful artwork to help raise funds for the school.
Her work will be on display at the June 24 event, as well as during the duration of Langham Theatre’s production of Send Me No Flowers. Some of the proceeds from the art sales will also be going to support the programming at Langham Court Theatre.
VISA is the only independent school for visual arts that is designated by B.C.'s Ministry of Advanced Education. VISA was established in 2004 and is celebrating its 20th year of inspired teaching.
“To date, more than 5,000 students have attended our art courses and workshops,” said Wendy Welch, founder and executive director of the school. “The strength of VISA is its focus on community and diversity. Our classes typically have students ranging in age from 16 to 90 years, all learning together.”
The school relies on fundraisers and donations to supplement its income, as revenue from tuition does not cover the cost of running the school. The school receives no financial support from any level of government.
VISA is grateful for the support of the Langham Court Theatre, which is generously providing the space for this event.
