A popular gathering at a Vernon service club where patrons try to win bundles of meat boosts local organizations.

Vernon's Army Navy Air Force (ANAF) Unit #5 recently donated $40,000 to a number of groups and charities.

"The money comes from our meat draw revenue," said ANAF Unit #5 president Erwin Ruf.

Meat draws are held every Saturday, from 2-4 p.m., at the club on 46th Avenue (with the Spitfire airplane on the roof).

A total of 16 organizations were given cheques from Ruf and other members of the ANAF board. Receiving donations were:

• Together For Christmas;

• Kalamalka Highlanders Pipe Band;

• North Okanagan Pipes and Drums;

• Royal Canadian Air Cadets 223 Red Lions;

• Salvation Army;

• Community Dental Access Centre;

• Archway Society for Domestic Peace;

• North Okanagan Hospice Society;

• Santa's Anonymous;

• Silver Star Adaptive Snow Sports;

• Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation;

The ANAF also awarded four bursaries to local students Mercedes Jones, Ashton Sutch, Brianna Over, and Declan Fitzpatrick.
