Every November the Royal Canadian Legion asked students from around Canada to participate in the National Youth Remembrance Contests.
There are two contests: The Poster Contest, which excepts colour or black and white submissions from kindergarten to Grade 12, and The Literary Contest that students from Grade 4 to 12 can submit a poem or an dssay. All entries are also divided into primary (Grades K-3), junior (Grades 4-6), intermediate (Grades 7-9), and Senior (Grades 10-12) categories.
St. Joseph School submits entries in all categories annually and have won first place for many of entries at the Royal Canadian Legion No. 51 Nelson Level over the past years. First place entries then move on to the West Kootenay region, and then the provincial level.
This year, four St. Joseph School students placed first for their submissions at the Nelson Legion level. Tuula Lyon for her coloured poster (intermediate), Millie Tremblay for her poem (junior), Mazzi Richards for her black and white poster (junior), and Zoe Huscroft for her essay (junior). Their submissions moved on against over 6,000 entries from across British Columbia and Yukon Territory, in each of their categories.
The Legion’s B.C./Yukon Command judged all these entries from across the province and two St. Joseph students were recognized. Richards received an honourable mention for her poster, and Huscroft received first place for her essay.
St. Joseph School was also awarded the School Program – Poppy Appreciation Award for outstanding submissions. Huscroft's essay will now be forwarded to the Legion National Foundation in Ottawa, to be judged at the national level.
