While kitten season may seem like a cute and cuddly time, it also highlights the need for responsible pet ownership and the importance of spaying and neutering to prevent overpopulation and ensure the well-being of cats, said Clearwater Humane Society executive director Maddy Beka-Capostinsky.
"By taking action, we can help reduce the number of unwanted kittens entering shelters and give cats a better chance at a healthy, happy life,” she said Monday, May 10.
Beka-Capostinsky said it’s important to spay or neuter pets as this is the most effective way to prevent unwanted kittens. She also advised pet lovers to advocate for spaying and neutering in their communities and encouraged friends and family to get their cats fixed.
The long-time animal advocate encourages local animal supporters to volunteer, donate, or adopt a pet. “Educate yourself about responsible pet ownership and learn about kitten season and how to prevent it. Spaying and neutering can help prevent the suffering of cats and kittens who may be vulnerable, sick, or orphaned. Spaying and neutering are the most effective way to prevent the overpopulation of cats,” she explained.
Beka-Capostinsky feels that spaying and neutering helps keep communities safe and prevents unwanted infectious diseases which are transferred through bite or scratch wounds.
“Having healthy pets, makes for a happy and healthy pet community," she added.
