Clearwater Royal Canadian Legion Branch 259 vice president Wayne Wysoski pinned the first poppy on Clearwater mayor Merlin Blackwell on Friday, Oct. 27.
The pinning of the first poppy signifies the official start of the annual poppy sales drive benefitting veterans. The Canadian Legion, formed in 1925, continued this connection.
The poppy was worn on the left lapel and close to the heart to recognize the sacrifice of soldiers in times of war. Through donations to the Legion Poppy Fund, the Legion provides financial assistance and support to veterans, including Canadian Armed Forces and RCMP, and their families who are in need.
