Clearwater pizza restaurant Double ‘R’ Pizza hosted a full house of spectators on Monday, Nov. 18 there to watch competitive eater Scott Watkins, from the YouTube channel ScottEats, take on the restaurant's pizza challenge.
The food challenge was created by the husband and wife team, Craig and Angela Reiter, owners of Double ‘R’ Pizza and Subs. A challenger must consume an 18-inch pizza topped with every pizza topping and two pounds of cheese within one hour, to win the meal for free and a 5XL T-shirt that brags, “I Dominated the Double ‘R’ Pizza challenge.”
Before Scott's arrival, the challenge had been around for a year, and only two locals in the community had tried to eat the pizza, unfortunately both were unsuccessful.
Scott has been competitive eating for five years, drawing his inspiration from other famous competitive eaters, such as Randy Santel. The Double ‘R’ Pizza challenge offered him a tasty and fun opportunity for a YouTube video that was only a three-hour drive away from his hometown of Kelowna.
Upon picking up the first slice to eat, Scott proclaimed to the audience that this was, “The thickest pizza in the world.” He finished the first slice of pizza in a mere 10 seconds, putting him on track to complete the meal in a half-an-hour. This was a goal set by Scott and encouraged by spectators he spoke to while setting up. The crowd cheered as Scott pushed down the last few bites and had a finishing time of 29:51 minutes. Despite his rigorous preparation, which included drinking four litres of electrolytes the night before, Scott still found his success difficult to obtain. When asked if it was difficult, Scott answered, “Pizza challenges are always difficult”.
The Double ‘R’ Pizza challenge is open and available to anyone who would like to make an attempt. Scott’s video will be uploaded to his channel, http://www.youtube.com/@scotteats in three months time.
