On Sunday, May 25, gleaming chrome, roaring engines, and a shared sense of purpose will take centrestage at the Horsepower for Healing car show—a unique community event focused on men’s mental health, harm reduction, and connection.
Hosted at the Port Alberni Fall Fair grounds from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the event brings together classic cars, custom builds, food trucks, and local organizations to create a welcoming, stigma-free space for people of all ages—especially men aged 18–45, a demographic disproportionately affected by toxic drug poisoning and mental health challenges in B.C. and Vancouver Island in particular.
“This isn’t your typical car show,” says Nina Kossenko, co-chair of the Port Alberni Community Action Team (CAT). “We’re using familiar interests as a way to start deeper conversations and highlight resources. It's about meeting people where they’re at, and reminding them that support is available and community matters.”
Men are statistically less likely to seek help for mental health concerns or to speak openly about their struggles, she said. Many carry the burden silently due to social stigma, internalized pressure to “tough it out,” or a lack of accessible and culturally safe support.
"This event is designed to create a space where those barriers can begin to break down," she said.
Admission is free, and the day will include booths, support resources, and opportunities to connect with wellness services in a relaxed and inclusive environment. The event is family-friendly, rain or shine.
Horsepower for Healing is organized by the Port Alberni Community Action Team (CAT) with support from local volunteers, businesses, and health organizations. Connect with the CAT online on Facebook or Instagram, or email info@ptalbcat.org.
