The Clearwater Farmers’ Market is a significant economic player in Clearwater, injecting nearly $425,000 annually into the local economy, according to a recent study.
“Although people know the market is a great place to buy fresh, local food, the results of this study help us communicate to others how valuable the farmers’ market is to our community,” said Joanna Hurst, manager of the Clearwater Farmers’ Market.
Approximately 12,670 people visit the Clearwater market annually, with 462 people paying a visit on the day of the study (Aug. 5, 2023) and more than 50 people participating in the survey. An estimated 60 per cent of shoppers visit the market either “regularly” (almost weekly) or “frequently” (two to three times per month).
The Clearwater Farmers’ Market is participating in a province-wide study of the economic benefits of farmers markets. “Farmers’ markets continue to serve as the face of farming in B.C.,” said Heather O’Hara, Executive Director of the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets. “There has been significant growth in the number and vitality of farmers’ markets in B.C., and it is important to understand not only what they contribute but also how much they contribute to local neighbourhoods, cities, and towns.”
Dr. David Connell, a professor from the University of Northern BC who is leading the project, added “This project builds upon the results of a similar study we did in 2006 and in 2012. At the end of this project, we will be able to compare our results with these past studies to see how much has changed.”
Celebrating its 15th year in the cozy community of Clearwater, the Clearwater Farmers’ Market thrives as a vibrant marketplace featuring between 15 and 25 vendors. This diverse assembly offers an array of goods including produce, seasonal plants, baked goods, arts, crafts, and woodworking.
The market is situated in the grounds of the Dutch Lake Community Centre. It is wheelchair accessible and conveniently adjacent to a children’s playground, outdoor stage, and ample grassy space for family leisure. Proximity to Dutch Lake Beach and the Clearwater River Trail enhances its allure. The market’s offerings extend beyond commerce, with live music and annual events like the fall harvest fair adding to its appeal.
The study is being carried out by the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets in collaboration with Dr. Connell, a professor at the University of Northern British Columbia. Financial assistance was provided by the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets and the BC Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
