A sweet fundraising making the rounds around town is helping orphaned children in Mexico.

Cotton's Chocolates' owner Barrita Durward, who operates the Sweet Smiles Society, has taken on another orphanage that is in need of some basic necessities.

She is hitting the streets with discounted chocolate sales to raise money for the new female-only orphanage, called La Casa Hogar, in Cozumel.

"There’s no government funding," she said of the need for support for these organizations.

In fact, the youth at the orphanage have minimal basic hygiene items.

"They are using newspaper and magazine pages when they get their periods," said Durward.

So when she's not busy making chocolate or running her 30th Avenue store, Durward is visiting local businesses trying to fundraise.

"I’m trying to sneak in and pester people," she laughed.

Any businesses who would like Durward to bring her discounted chocolates by can call her at 778-212-2438.

Durward has also started a community meal program in Giradot, Columbia, with protein-packed meals down to 83 cents Canadian.

"They get the homeless people and people in need helping," said Durward of the program which she will soon be making chocolate basket sales for.
