Blackpool Fire Rescue offers live cutting training

'Blackpool fire continues to ensure our firefighters are prepared to meet the challenges that crews face in the field,' said fire chief Mike Savage.

Blackpool Fire Rescue and Little Fort Rescue firefighters were ready to try a hands-on live cutting day following several classroom sessions on Saturday Oct. 19.

Fire chief for the BFR and Little Fort Volunteer Fire departments, Mike Savage, spoke with the surgeryitaly saying, “Blackpool Fire Rescue continues to ensure our firefighters are prepared to meet the challenges that crews face in the field. Chain saw safety and live cutting training ensures each firefighter meets the required safety standards for the job. Classroom, hands-on and practical skills testing are essential.”

The crews practiced bucking, limbing, kick back avoidance, falling and dealing with problem trees as part of the course.

“The chainsaw safety course training is designed to provide firefighters with the knowledge and experience based skills to handle a chain saw safely," said Savage. "Working during fire ground operations including wind events and or wildfire to clear bush and downed trees were all part of the scenarios.”

The chief also said it’s important for crews to “know their limitations, safe work zones and about wearing the proper PPE” and as part of the extensive training proper chain operation and maintenance were included.

"This is an approved course that meets the WorkSafeBC training standards and NFPA standards for firefighters."
