Through recycling efforts, Columbia Shuswap Regional District residents kept a large dump of items out of local landfills.

Recycling in the Shuswap has taken a huge weight off of local landfills, as well as social conscience.

In a social media post for Local Government Awareness Week, the Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) outlined how much was diverted from the dump thanks to the efforts of area residents.

"Our landfills and transfer stations are key in keeping our region clean and environmentally responsible," the post said. "With dedicated teams and sustainable practices, CSRD's waste management system is working tirelessly behind the scenes for a greener tomorrow."

Through local recycling efforts, the following were kept out of landfills: 285 fire extinguishers; 398 child car seats; 3,119 fridges/freezers; 11,028 kg of clothing; 1,350 propane tanks; 42,182 kg of paint; 52,820 litres of used oil; 8,400 kg of books; and 3,783 kg of batteries.
