No matter what life throws at you it seems there is more likely than not a solution, a silver lining or a way to find the sunshine through the clouds.

You know all of the cliché sayings, like making the best out of a bad situation. How about, ‘when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.’

Sometimes challenging situations can bring unexpected gifts as well. There are so many opportunities if we just look for them and sluff off the stress of the moment.

Perhaps it’s all in the way we choose to ‘see’ things during a life test. I’d like to think that over the years I’ve become a bit more seasoned in my thinking, falling back on my sense of humour in tough or stressful moments has certainly helped. But not everything is funny and sometimes you just have to allow yourself the grace of showing your raw emotions, let go and have a good cry over a tub of chocolate ice cream and start fresh.

In this fast-paced world I’ve found personally that I receive the greatest advice, joy and perspective from children. Kids do offer an honesty that is so refreshing, often offering unsolicited truth with such simple ways of looking at things around them.

These thoughts came rolling through to me following a little conversation, with our youngest granddaughter, Vivienne (Vivy) over the weekend. She was telling us about her new Care Bear, and she said, “I just have to say something to you Gramma, it’s a wishing bear, it’s not just a bear, it gives REAL wishes that can come true.” Hearing her purity and serious tone I realized in that moment that as we grow older perhaps, we have lost that pure trust over time. That confidence that says anything can come true if you just believe.

As I hung up the phone, I realized I was smiling at the thought of her authentic confidence and belief she could make a wish that would come true.

I think I’m going to look for a star in the sky tonight…and make a wish. What can it hurt?
