The Blue River Community Garden coordinators are gathering up their garden tools and pitching in to ready the space for spring planting this year.
"It is the season of the garden! Please sign up for your garden box by visiting our Facebook page and leaving a comment. You will be asked to contribute a minimum of three hours of garden maintenance each month to help keep the space clean, tidy and inviting," posted Lee Onslow, TNRD director for Area 'B' and community garden sponsor.
Onslow also listed the various maintenance ideas volunteers and garden participants can contribute such as; weeding the rock garden, pulling weeds from around the vines and trees, watering the vines growing outside of the fence, cleaning and dusting in the gazebo, cleaning and maintaining the sink area and maintaining the community garden boxes and keeping them weed free.
"Every bit helps and if you choose to have a garden box, your help is expected. Whoo hoo! I can't wait to see what we will allow grow this year," said Onslow.
Blue River’s Community Garden is an inspiration to other communities according to North Thompson Communities Foundation (NTCF) director Cheryl Thomas.
"It's just wonderful to see the community gardening together and enjoying the space," Thomas said.
The NTCF assisted in funding the community garden concept along with other funding partners.
Community members are welcome to come weed, enjoy the seats and picnic, use the gazebo or pick and utilize any of the vegetables available any time they choose. It’s open to all residents.
The garden is fenced to keep out unwanted predators and each raised wooden garden box has a hand-painted sign attached with a cute saying or family name. The gazebo is screened in and is furnished with comfy chairs, a rock snake is being added to with painted rocks from the kids and others welcome gazebo visitors.
"Everyone is welcome to enjoy the Blue River Community Garden and we are very proud of it," added Onslow.
